Camelford
Camelford
is a historical town built on the River Camel, with the
main north coast road, the A39 (Atlantic Highway) also
flowing through the town which runs from Barnstaple-Bideford-Bude-Camelford-Wadebridge-Newquay,
the sea-side villages of Port Isaac, Boscastle and Tintagel
are only ten minutes away. It is an ideal base when exploring
Cornwall, you will be close to the coast and its beaches
in one direction and Bodmin Moor in the other. This ancient
town which is set within the magnificent wooded countryside
straddling the River Camel (originally called Camalan
- meaning 'pretty' and 'crooked'), is a small but flourishing
town with a great deal of history.
Some believe that King Arthur and his Knights form part
of the North Cornwall history, and that Camelford was
once the famed 'Camelot'
There
are some breath taking sandy beaches sheltered from the
wind and trapping the sun including Bossiney Cove, Crackington
Haven and Trebarwith Strand - all close at hand. Whilst
just inland you have the delights of Roughtor (from the
top of which you can see both the North and South coasts
of Cornwall) and Cornwall's highest mountain, Brown Willy.
North
Cornwall has over sixty miles of Atlantic coast. Much
of the coast and Bodmin Moor has been designated as an
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Camelford
town also has much to offer for those travelling around
North Cornwall, including doctors, dentists, banks, post
office and all the other shops you would need. There is
also a leisure centre and swimming pool, caravan and camp
sites and an impressive eighteen-hole golf course.
In
short, Camelford is at the heart of a marvellous area
for touring, walking, fishing, swimming and surfing. It
is steeped in history and legend. The town itself, and
its immediate area, offer excellent shopping, sporting
and holiday facilities.
Whether
you are rambling, cycling, touring, walking or just exploring
all that North Cornwall has to offer take your time, and
let the surroundings work their magic on you.
